  Hey Adventure Lovers,

This is about some serious adventure, and here is the amazing platter set for you... Get set for the most thrilling 1800 ft rappelling of your life !!!

brings for you this season an Extreme Adventure (DECEMBER).

The Amazing Kokankada !! Safety remains our first priority as always*

Endurance Level: Medium
Place: KONKAN KADA at Harishchandragad (height - 4500ft)
Rappelling Height: 1800ft (4 stages)

DATE:
 January 23 to 26
TIME: 7 AM to 6 PM EVENT: 1800ft
ACTUAL RAPPELLING Group Size:30 participants per Batch.

Prior experience in rappelling required.

Some details about Harishchandragad and Konkan kada:

Harishchandragad is a hill fort in the Ahmednagar region of India. Its history is linked with that of Malshej Ghat, and it has played a major role in guarding the surrounding region. The height of the fort is 4671 ft MSL.

The most interesting point on this fort is this cliff, which has always fascinated many people from many years. The cliff faces west and looks down upon the Konkan. From here, one can have a breathtaking view of the surrounding region and the setting sun. This cliff is not just vertical, but it is an overhang, almost like a cobra's hood.

The Konkankada, a unique formation in the Sahyadris, is really tough and a challenge for the trekkers. This is a semicircular cliff of about 2,000 ft straight drop + 1000 ft slant fall in the Konkan plains. The surrounding grandeur and beauty of the plains and the mountains leaves us totally spellbound. It is one of the highest direct fall cliffs to be found in Maharashtra and Western Ghats.

This is a combination of thrill and bliss that every true adventurer would say ‘YES!!!’ to… Rappelling, also known as abseiling is an act of descending a mountain face by sliding down a rope, which is attached to a body harness and fastened to an overhead projection, with sufficient friction provided as to make the speed of the descend controllable.

Detail of the Rappelling:

To rappel the Konkankada atleast once in a life time is a dream of almost every adventure freak in Sahyadris. It is the most thrilling and spellbound activity offered in the Sahyadris range. Rappelling will be conducted in 4 stages to complete 1800ft.

Difficulty Trek and Trip Format

Nepal is like not home. It is exotic, it is wonderful, but it is also different. Great elevation changes, differences in customs and language, menu variations, lodge limitations, and the many other mysteries and wonders of travel in Nepal are all conditions you must be physically and mentally prepared for. The itinerary may change. You may meet unknown hardships as well as unexpected pleasures. Come with an open mind and positive spirit.

For those of you new to trekking, you have a wonderful experience in store. Trekking is walking, generally on good trails, usually up and down (sometimes 900 m a day), carrying only a day pack, through magnificent scenery. The day starts early, and often the bulk of the day's kilometers are covered in morning hours. The shorter afternoon hike brings you to the site of the lodge to be used that night.

This trip is designed so that an average hiker will require 5-6 hours of hiking per day to reach the evening’s camp.  In general this is a moderate trek, but remember that trails are often steep in Nepal and at 3 000 m any hiking can seem strenuous.  On some days altitude gains and looses of up to 900 m can be expected.  Strengthen your knee muscles and prepare for several days of steep descents of anywhere up to 900 m. should anyone have altitude problems during this trek, it will be possible to drop down till Namche.

A program of cardiovascular conditioning such as running, swimming, biking or aerobics is essential, but try to supplement your exercise with hiking on steep hills or running up and down steps. The more you can condition by closely simulating the activities of trekking, the better off you will be. While the trip is rated as moderate overall, several days will be strenuous, and good conditioning is essential to your enjoyment of the trek.

Personal gear will be carried by porters. Porters can carry two members' duffel bags. Since their load is 25 kg, this means that your duffel cannot exceed twelve kilos. We stay in locally owned lodges and will receive an insight into family living.  All the guest houses have toilets and cold showers.  Some of the guesthouses have hot showers available and every lodge is equipped with solar power systems for lightning.  The main common room has a heater, nice in the cold nights.

Remember that, the latitude of Nepal is between 26˚ and 30˚N so it will warm at the lower elevations (short and T-shirt) while nights will be cool. Day temperatures will be between 10˚C and 15˚C at the lower elevations and between 5˚C and 10˚C at our highest elevations during spring and fall trips (till to -15 ˚C in winter).  Temperatures at night will be cool being mostly between 0˚ C and - 5 C except for winter trek where temperatures till - 20˚C may occur at night. In December though you will enjoy clear skies and less crowded hiking trails. If you dress warm it’s a wonderful time to come to Khumbu region. During fall trips the weather is generally sunny, although an occasional storm could occur.  Spring sees more clouds in the afternoon and the possibility of occasional thunder storms.

This is not a tour where everything can be planned in advance to run like clockwork. You probably won't experience exactly what is written in the daily itinerary. Often adjustment must be made in the field. We want you to participate in the trip with the clear understanding that things can go wrong. Adventure travel does involve certain risks both emotional and physical. One has to be flexible when travelling in Nepal and have a cheerful attitude.

Mount Everest - Scaling From South

Mount Everest - Scaling From South

Scaling Mount Everest Summit, is every Trekkers, Every Mountaineers dream.. But it takes lots of preparation, team work, strategy, equipment and gear; and tons of Will Power to do it.

Everest from the South Side in Nepal

Base Camp - 17,500 feet (5350 meters)

South Col Route up Mt. Everest. Base camp is located at 17,500 feet and it the most popular route to Summit of Highest Mountain Peak in the World. This is where climbers begin their true trip up the mountain. This is also where support staff often remain to monitor the expeditions and provide medical assistance when necessary. Many organizations offer hiking trips which just go to base camp as the trip is not technically challenging (though you must be very fit).

From base camp, climbers typically train and acclimate (permitting the body to adjust to the decreased oxygen in the air) by traveling and bringing supplies back and forth through the often treacherous Khumbu Icefall. This training and recuperation continues throughout the climb, with the final summit push often being the only time to climbers do not go back and forth between camps to train, bring supplies, and recuperate for the next push.

The Icefall is in constant motion. It contains enormous ice seracs, often larger than houses, which dangle precariously over the climbers heads, threatening to fall at any moment without warning, as the climbers cross endless crevasses and listen to continuous ice creaking below. This often acts as a testing ground to judge if less experienced climbers will be capable of continuing. The Icefall is located between 17,500 and 19,500 feet.

Camp I - 5900 meters

After the Icefall, the climbers arrive at Camp I, which is located at 19,500 feet. Depending on the type of expedition, Camp I will either be stocked by the climbers as they ascend and descend the Icefall, or by Sherpas in advance.

The area between Camp I and Camp II is known as the Western Cwm. As the climbers reach Camp II at 21,000 feet, they may be temporarily out of sight of their support at Base camp. Nonetheless, modern communication devises permit the parties to stay in contact.

Camp II - 6500 meters

As the climbers leave Camp II, they travel towards the Lhotse face (Lhotse is a 27,920 foot mountain bordering Everest). The Lhotse face is a steep, shiny icy wall. Though not technically extremely difficult, one misstep or slip could mean a climber's life. Indeed, many climbers have lost their lives through such mishaps.

Camp III - 23,700 feet (7200 meters)

To reach Camp III, climbers must negotiate the Lhotse Face. Climbing a sheer wall of ice demands skill, strength and stamina. It is so steep and treacherous that many Sherpas move directly from Camp II to Camp IV on the South Col, refusing to stay on the Lhotse Face.

Camp IV - 26,300 feet (8000 meters)

As you’re leaving C4…it’s a little bit of a down slope, with the uphill side to the left. There are typically snow on the ledges to walk down on, interspersed with rock, along with some fixed rope. The problem with the rope is that the anchors are bad, and there’s not much holding the rope and a fall could be serious. Fortunately it’s not too steep, but there is a ton of exposure and people are usually tired when walking down from camp. The rock is a little down sloping to the right as well, and with crampons on, it can be bit tricky with any kind of wind. There’s a little short slope on reliable snow which leads to the top of the Geneva Spur, and the wind pressure gradient across the spur can increase there as you’re getting set up for the rappel. Wearing an oxygen mask here can create some footing issues during the rappel, because it’s impossible to see over the mask and down to the feet. For that reason, some people choose to leave Camp 4 without gas, as it’s easier to keep moving down the Spur when it’s important to see all the small rock steps and where the old feet are going. Navigating down through all of the spaghetti of fixed ropes is a bit of a challenge, especially with mush for brains at that point. One lands on some lower ledges which aren’t so steep, where fixed ropes through here are solid. At this point, it’s just a matter of staying upright, and usually, the wind has died significantly after dropping off the Spur. The route turns hard to the left onto the snowfield that leads to the top of the Yellow Bands.

Camp IV, which is at 26,300 on the Lhotse face, is typically the climbers' first overnight stay in the Death Zone. The Death Zone is above 26,000 feet. Though there is nothing magical about that altitude, it is at this altitude that most human bodies lose all ability to acclimate. Accordingly, the body slowly begins to deteriorate and die - thus, the name "Death Zone." The longer a climber stays at this altitude, the more likely illness (HACE - high altitude cerebral edema - or HAPE - high altitude pulmonary edema) or death will occur. Most climbers will use oxygen to climb and sleep at this altitude and above. Generally, Sherpas refuse to sleep on the Lhotse face and will travel to either Camp II or Camp IV.

Camp IV is located at 26,300 feet. This is the final major camp for the summit push. It is at this point that the climbers make their final preparations. It is also a haven for worn-out climbers on their exhausting descent from summit attempts (both successful and not). Sherpas or other climbers will often wait here with supplies and hot tea for returning climbers.

From Camp IV, climbers will push through the Balcony, at 27,500 feet, to the Hillary Step at 28,800 feet. The Hillary Step, an over 70 foot rock step, is named after Sir. Edmond Hillary, who in 1953, along with Tenzing Norgay, became the first people to summit Everest. The Hillary Step, which is climbed with fixed ropes, often becomes a bottleneck as only one climber can climb at a time. Though the Hillary Step would not be difficult at sea level for experienced climbers, at Everest's altitude, it is considered the most technically challenging aspect of the climb.

                                                                    Hillary Step

Summit - 29,028 feet (8848 meters)

Once the climbers ascend the Hillary Step, they slowly and laboriously proceed to the summit at 29,028 feet. The summit sits at the top of the world. Though not the closest place to the sun due to the earth's curve, it is the highest peak on earth. Due to the decreased air pressure, the summit contains less than one third the oxygen as at sea level. If dropped off on the summit directly from sea level (impossible in reality), a person would die within minutes. Typically, climbers achieving the great summit will take pictures, gain their composure, briefly enjoy the view, then return to Camp IV as quickly as possible. The risk of staying at the summit and the exhaustion from achieving the summit is too great to permit climbers to fully enjoy the great accomplishment at that moment.

The return trip can be even more dangerous than the climb to the summit.

Travel notes:

List of things that you might not have considered taking along, but that can greatly enhance the quality and comfort of your journey.

A variety of clothing is necessary for the Mt Everest Base Camp trek. The emphasis on equipment necessary follows two simple aspects: Lightweight and Functional. The items you choose to take should be lightweight, dependable, and adaptable to a variety of extreme weather conditions. The quality of the trekking equipment you choose has a lot to do with how warm, dry, and safe you will remain. For this reason you have to be critical of quality and the proper fit of clothing.

You will need clothing for around Kathmandu, trekking in the humidity and heat, and to protect you from the cooler temperatures in the mountains.

§  A 60 to 70 liter Backpack to carry your main belongings during the trek, this bag will be carried by the porter. Make sure its a good and strong bag and has a waterproof bag cover along with it.

§  A good pair of hiking boots (well broken in) - You will be spending five to six hours a day on the trail. Your boots are an important part of your gear. The boots can be light to medium, high or low. If you plan to go in the months when snow can fall, the high boots are better for hiking in the snow.

§  Soft and light shoes or floaters (sneakers or kung-fu shoes are perfect) - after a long hike in inflexible hiking boots, you will be extremely happy to have some light and soft footwear to to wear around the lodge or in the village.

§  Thermals, Jacket,Woolens

·                                 Inner Thermals (Dry fits made of systhetic material are very useful) - Three Pairs of Woolen Full Inner's.

·                          Woolen Socks - Three to Four Pairs.

·                          Woolen Sweater One Pair.

·                          Windproof regular winter jacket.

·                          Down Jacket with Good Thermals and having a head (hood)

·                          Thermal Head Gear  (Monkey Cap, Muffler)

·                          Water Proof Hand Gloves for Cold, carry a spare woolen gloves.

§  Day Pack - Your main backpack will go with the porter. You need a second bag to carry your day belongings you may require during the day trek (Jackets, Gloves, Camera, Mobile Phone, Poncho, Money, Passport, Other Documents, Water bottles, Chocolates etc). Your day pack may weigh around 5 to 7 KGs depending what all you carry in it.

§  Sleeping bag (Can be hired) - Most lodges will offer you blankets, some might not, even if they do they might not be sufficient if you are not used to the cold conditions at night. You can very easily hire a good -25 Degree Centigrade Sleeping bag at Kathmandu for 12 days costing approximately Rs.100/-+ per day.

§  Down Jackets (Can be hired) - Your regular winter jacket will not be sufficient as your near EBC. You will require down jackets as you near EBC / Kalapathar around 4 to 5 nights you will find this jacket very useful.

You can very easily hire a good down jacket at Kathmandu for 12 days costing approximately Rs.100/- per day.

§  Trekking poles  (Can be hired but recomended to buy your own) - Invest in a pair of trekking poles, very useful on long treks as it reduces stress on your back and knees.

§  Fabric bandaids - blisters on the feet can turn a wonderful walk into a hell. Bandaids (sticking plasters) should be immediately applied to any area of the foot that there is irritation and friction - don't wait for the blister to develop before doing this. However, only fabric made bandaids (e.g., Moleskin) will stick to a sweaty foot. Others (even those that claim to be water-proof) will fall off in minutes. A good alternative to bandaids is duct tape. Works great for blisters and also proves invaluable in many other ways.

§  Other items you can buy and bring from your city that can save you money and also very useful.

§  1) Chocolates and Protein Bars (Carry around 22 units)

§  2) Dry Fruits (Almonds, Walnuts, Cashew and Raisins) - 550 gms.

§  3) Candid Anti Fungal Powder (2 Units)

§  4) Rejuvenation mix like electrol etc for treks

§  5) Cold Cream and Sun Screen (40 to 50 SPF)

§  6) Lip Balm with UV protection

§  7) Sun Glasses with UV Protection

§  8) Good Hat

§  9) Water Bottles (2 of 1 liter each made of good plastic)

§  10) Personal stock of medical kit. (Include - Dimox, Crocine, Vix Rub, Volini, Any personally preferred anti septic cream).. General medical kit will be available with the group.

§  11) Thermal Pads (you may be able to buy some in any adventure shop, 5 to 6 units is useful)

§  12) Sufficient Spare batteries for Camera and Cell Phones. You can get a local SIMM Card at Kathmandu. Works almost on 70% of the trek route.

13) Lite Poncho (Rain protection)

Tips for the trek

Take a good run down from the expert at the beginning of the trek on day wise how the trek is planned. Every evening also take a run down on what is to be expected on next day's trek. Pace yourself correctly trek guides are there to guide you. Trekking at any high altitude is all about good acclimatization and always taking it at easy pace. Never be in a rush to climb up hill, understand your body limits and rhythm (don't under estimate or over estimate the same). Keep  yourself well hydrated by taking few sips of water every 15 to 20 minutes (better to have a 2 liter water bladder in your backpack so you need not remove your water bottle every-time). Keep energy bars and protein bars handy you can keep having small nibbles along with way at frequent intervals.  Few people tend to loose appetite at high altitude, we must eat well three meals a day to replenish all calories we burn everyday. Enjoy your trek rather than enduring it, its all in the mind. If you enjoy your trek any person with average fitness can do any trek and if fact you may surprisingly find the EBC trek relatively easy.
